RESIDENT LIFE

Housing Opportunities / Real Estate Info

Richmond’s affordable housing and relatively average cost of living provide the opportunity for residents to buy, rather than rent during their residency. More than half of the anesthesia residents own homes or condos in the Richmond area.

The city is divided into several distinct neighborhoods that have their own unique qualities:

The Downtown area is the closest to VCU Medical Center and is a mix of retail, commercial and residential development. Over the last several years, the city turned many of the old warehouses and factories into condos, apartments and town homes. This area is close to many of Richmond’s most popular bars, clubs and restaurants, making it a popular spot for many of VCU’s single residents.

The East End overlooks the James River and is within walking distance to VCU Medical Center. This area has been revitalized over the last several years. Many of the historical homes and buildings in the area have been redeveloped into apartments and condos. This area is close to restaurants and bars located in the downtown and central areas of Richmond.

Central Richmond is a unique mixture of students, professionals, artist and long-time residents. The areas beautiful row houses are intermixed with neighborhood bars and restaurants. Many of the downtown sites, including museums and parks are found in this area. Nearby Carytown is filled with boutique shops and fine dining, and is a popular spot for local and visitors.

The West End offers the space of suburban living with the convenience of the city. Only 15 minutes from VCU Medical Center, the West End provides the feeling that you have left the hustle of the city. The neighborhoods boast beautifully landscaped yards and towering trees. Nearby are two of Richmond’s most popular shopping areas, Stony Point Fashion Park and Short Pump Town Center.

Richmond ’s Southwest area has a dual personality. It offers elements of country living such as wildflower-filled meadows and secluded riverfront properties. It also contains the popular Stony Point Fashion Park and a fast growing retail area at Forest Hill and Chippenham Parkway.

Southside Richmond offers a wide variety of living opportunities. Many of the anesthesia residents have either built or bought homes in this part of Richmond. The neighborhoods generally have more spacious homes and yards at a more reasonable price then some of the older neighborhoods located closer to downtown. Likewise, this area is close to many shopping and dining locations.

The Northside of Richmond was once Richmond ’s most desirable areas in which to live. The neighborhoods are filled with large homes with beautiful flowers and trees. This area provides a quick commute to VCU Medical Center , but is limited in its dining, entertainment and shopping.

Other nearby communities, including Glen Allen, Mechanicsville, Chesterfield and Ashland are within driving distance to VCU and are popular locations of the Residents.
