Description: The student will acquire knowledge and skills in preoperative and postoperative care, IV placement, airway and ventilatory management, clinical pharmacology, and pain management. Lectures will be given on topics essential to working in clinical anesthesia. The student will work in the Main Operating Room, Ambulatory Care Center , pain service, and obstetrics, with resident and attending physicians managing clinical anesthesia cases. Evaluations are done on a daily basis and any student who performs on a superior level will receive honors. Most students will spend one week at the McGuire Veterans Hospital .

Objectives:

  • Top expose students to a wide variety of patients having anesthesia for surgery and other procedures.
  • To give clinical opportunities for preanesthetic evaluation, IV placement, airway management, intubation, and anesthetic management.
  • To allow participation in general and specialty procedures, inpatient and ambulatory anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, other remote anesthetizing locations, and pain management.
  • To expose students to two distinct hospital departments, MCV Hospitals and McGuire Veterans Hospital.
