DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology at the VCU Medical Center, the teaching component of the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System. The VCU Health System includes MCV Hospital, a large tertiary care center and the only level 1 trauma center in the region, providing care for rural, urban, and suburban communities. With over 800 licensed beds, we provide anesthesia care for more than 10,000 inpatient surgeries, more than 13,000 outpatient surgeries, and more than 2,200 births annually, as well as a large number of procedures outside of the operating rooms.
The VCU Medical Center is one of the largest university affiliated institutions for healthcare in the US with a long, rich history dating back to 1838. We invite you to view our history, and then see our future. VCU Medical Center stands alone as the most comprehensive academic medical center in central Virginia.
The Anesthesiology Department is an integral part of the health care system providing valuable perioperative services as well as consults for pain management and airway management. Residents are at the forefront of these services, backed by supportive attendings. Our program is funded for 36 residents and 10 interns with over 40 full-time faculty attendings at present.
